[Kate's quiet for a second, dumping a little extra sauce on her pasta as she tries to figure out what to say. She takes much longer doing it than is strictly necessary.]

Damian's been talking to me, at least. He's not bottling everything up like I thought he would.

[reneger]

( not bottling everything up, when he struggled to get words out with jason. which. also brings his attention to-- )

"Damian"?

[fledges]

[Oh, whoops, things she forgot to mention.]

Uh... Yeah. He told me his real name a little while ago.

[reneger]

You sure that's his real name?

( whatever, he's going to just. dig right into this pasta now, thanks. pretend that this is a completely normal conversation to be having while they're both covered in bandaids. )

[fledges]

If he gave me two aliases I'll be impressed at his paranoia.

[reneger]

I'll let you in on a secret.

( it's not a secret. but there is a dramatic pause, as jason pauses to. shove a forkful of pasta into his mouth. )

That kid's paranoia runs deeper than the fucking ocean.

[fledges]

[She sticks her tongue out at him.]

Let a girl pretend she's making progress, okay?

[reneger]

( sticking his tongue right back out at her. because they're both adults here. )

I'll tell you his real name, if you can do me a favor.

[fledges]

You and your favors.

[She says it so dramatically that it's clear she's teasing.]

But you're feeding me, so okay. What is it?

[reneger]

My favors're all important.

( another forkfull of pasta. )

Keep me updated, since he's opening up to you.

[fledges]

Okay. I can do that.

[Kate shoves a forkful of her own pasta in her mouth, and... yeah, okay, she's impressed. Good job, Jason.]

You have to keep me updated, too. I want to know how you're doing.

[reneger]

( he wants to give a stupid, ridiculous name but also: that'd get caught onto too fast. kate'd see through it, probably. so jason instead goes with: )

Jim. Dickie calls him Jimmy.

[fledges]

What? You're lying.

[Is he lying?]

Dickie?

[reneger]

Grayson.

( richard. dick. dickie. dickard. what difference does it make. )

You can ask him, if you wanna.

[fledges]

If we're going for dumb nicknames, can I call you...

[She pauses, considering carefully.]

Jay Jay?

[reneger]

Nope. I'll accept nothing short of Jay Danger for bad nicknames.

[fledges]

You know you're not supposed to choose your own nickname, right?

[reneger]

I'm a rebel, Kate. Rebels do as they please.

( this rebel will just. casually start exiting the kitchen, moving to the (well lived-in) sofa. )
